What is the proper way to ask a client to enter a tip on the credit card machine?

Credit Card Machines
My job has a new credit card machine, which you need to add the tip before the receipt is printed. What is a polite way to ask the client to leave a tip because the machine won’t allow us to adjust it after the receipt prints. I need an easy way to do it so I dont have to explain this everytime.
If the clients do not add tip at this time, they cannot add it later, which happened a lot before we got this new credit card machine.

You NEVER ask for a tip nor mention that one needs to do so. IA tip is optional, not a requirement. If the person doesn’t know the procedure, they will find a way or tip you more next time.
Your boss definitely is not making your job easy nor is he providing good customer service by making this difficult for the customer.
Also, it’s never good to bad-mouth the boss to the customer either.

Say, "Would you like to enter a tip on your card, or on the table?" They’ll say on the card, and you can ask how much. Or you could say "How much tip would you like to leave on your card?"

It is never appropriate to ask for a tip. You need to speak to your employer about the procedure of how to handle the tip.
If your customers wish to give you a tip they will figure a way to do it.
If not you get stiffed.

Try this: "If you are leaving a tip, would you like me to include it in this charge on your card or I can always run your card a second time?"
The client may think it will take extra long to run the card a second time, and go ahead and tell you to add the tip.
That’s a tough one. Any chance the owner might get the machine upgraded or modified? Sometimes just asking (the owner and the machine manufacturere) works wonders. You shouldn’t have to ask for a tip every time!

The salon I go to has this same thing. She just asks says "the total is; would you like me to the card for this amount"
