Apologise and smile.
Tell them you will be unable to take credit / debit card payments because your machine has just gone out of service.
Assure them that this does not normally happen and you have called out for an engineer to fix the device.
And then ask them if they would prefer to pay by cash or cheque.
PS - It actually helps if you have called out an engineer.

Make sure they are aware as soon as they enter your business. There is nothing worse than having someone shop/eat at a business only to find out the CC machine is broken; bad business all around. Get you CC machine fixed ASAP or you could lose quite a bit of business.

Put a sign over credit machine that its out of order, sorry for any inconvenience, but cash only.

post a sign that they can see when entering so that they know beforehand and can’t complain once ready to pay
