Hello all!
I am a Canadian Citizen currently in the process of becoming a permanent resident of the USA. Due to a past abusive relationship and teenage stupidity, I don’t have the prettiest credit score in Canada. I want to start building my credit in the US before I receive my Green Card and move down there. Is there anyway to do this without a Social Security Number or any other US documentation? Please help!

(Cell phone? Credit card?)
Also, is there anyway to avoid my Canadian credit from following me to US?

To make a long story short, I moved to Texas away from my family to start a "new life" and in the process of getting back on my feet I was irresponsible with my credit card and made a lot of mistakes with late payments, etc. I do not have anything in collections nor have I ever. I have never had a lawsuit or anything like that, but I am trying to pay off a credit card balance of 2500 as I am a full-time waitress and full-time student. So far I have paid it down to 2000, paying 150 a month and not using it. I am following a strict budget now and certainly have improved. I have paid all my bills on time for the past six months or so, but I know it will take a lot longer than that to improve from my past.

Would you all recommend I raise my credit limit to 3000+ on my card so I do not carry an amount so close to my limit, which negatively affects my score? I no longer use the card, I just pay on it, but I figured having the limit raised as I pay it off might be better because I wouldn’t stay so close to the limit as I paid it off (which will take awhile).

Any other advice on improving my credit score? I have a lot of open credit cards from stores like Old Navy, Victorias Secret, JcPennys with NO balance (nothing on them) that I canceled today (was this a good idea?) because I didn’t want to have them when I never use them.

Also, I canceled Sprint awhile back for a more affordable cell phone plan. The account is paid off and closed, but will canceling it hurt my credit score?

I’ll stop now. I’ve gotten a lot better and learned a LOT about budgeting and credit and what not as I have learned to support myself and grown up going to school and working. I just need advice on improving my credit score… I was a little depressed about it when I got my free credit report but expected it just the same. Any advice?

I have a low credit score but I don’t have any major debt. When I graduated from high school, preparing for college all these credit card companies were sending me cards. so like a idiot I used them not thinking about my credit score. I got behind on all of them. I had like 5 and i had to settle with the majority of them so i could get rid of them. However, now 6 years later I want to buy a house and get a car and my score is jacked up. I have paid all them off through settlement. but they are still reporting negative on my credit report. I have a phone bill of 1 I need to pay that’s still on there but my score is poor. What can I do to speed up the process for me to be able to at least get a car and a house. I know I have to pay that phone bill but how do i get those write offs and charge off, gone forever. Any suggestions?

Ok I am 23. I am a first year grad student and I also have a full time job. I am trying to be responsible and plan for my future. I have a low credit score because of stupid stuff and now I am trying to build my credit and show that I am responsible. I have 3 hospital bills on my credit report which I just paid all three of them off, I have a utility bill that I paid off, and I have a old phone bill that I am in the process of paying off. I wont to get a credit card to help show that I can pay bills online but I am not sure who I should go through since my credit isn’t the best. any suggestions. Thanks in advance

Im currently 21 yrs old and am interested in getting my credit score as high as possible so i can buy a house soon. What are the main factors that contribute to your credit score. I had a credit card and am in the process of paying the card off but should i keep it or cancel it, (they charge me about 15 dollars a month even when i dont use it). Also i have a car payment automatically taken out of my checking account, does that help?. And do small bills like tv bill and cell phone bill go on your report?. Is it good to have alot of stuff in your name as long as you pay? Thanks for all answers!

I graduated from my second college in December of 2008. While in school, my loans were in deferment from my first school. The company who bought the loan was ACS. I found out recently that "Sunburst Bank" had been reporting my student loans as late from June ‘08 through December ‘08 (while they were in deferment). I called the phone number on my credit report for "Sunburst Bank," and the phone number was for ACS - the company that bought my student loans. As if that wasn’t confusing enough, the lady who said she would send my inquiry on to the "credit reporting department" also said that there was no one to talk with in that department…..leading me to ask then how is this inquiry going to be processed. In the meantime, my credit score has tanked over 100 points, my credit card companies are raising my APRs, my car insurance is rising……and all for something I didn’t do and that isn’t my fault.

How do I get this corrected? I first reported the mistake on August 27, but today when I called the claim is still "pending" and they had no more information than that. They said that it takes 5-7 days for a claim inquiry to be processed through their credit reporting department and that I would be notified when it has been resolved…..but if there is no one to talk with in that department, how is anyone going to notify me???? If there is anyone out there who has an idea what steps I should take, please I’m desperate.

Ok…I must admit. I was young and dumb. I received a credit card when I was 15 very easily over the phone by lying about my age. They even called me! Og course, knowing nothing about credit I did what a 15,16 year old would do - shop. Now at 22 me and my lying has hurt my credit score. It didn’t matter to me then but now I have graduate and trying to establish myself. Credit is essential in this process! I was going to dispute this stating that at the time of the contractual agreement I was a minor and it was the cc company’s responsibility to verify that my SSN and birth date matched. I read this in a credit forum. Is this true and does it work? Have anyone ever done this?

I will never do this sh*t again. I feel depressed and embarrased about my score when I try to obtain credit or a loan now. I need some serious advice. Thanks.
The account is/was charged off.
Ok, I have never touched the card when I was 18. I shopped (big) once and never paid anything. If the account was charged off after my 18th birthday will I be able to still dispute it as a minor?
To Mary B:
First thing first - I had no means of paying for the debt while in school. I have tried to reconcile this but they do not want to work with me. A 0 bill had turned into a 00 bill and I am not able to pay that. If I wanted to act like a 13 yr old I would just forget about it and let it get removed in 7 yrs (which is in one year). I am just researching my options before I committ to anything. That doesn’t sound 13 to me. Thanks for your response by the way.

Hi,

I have a Bank of America Visa card. My credit card statement shows this:

Minimum Payment:.00
Minimum Payment Due Date:05/08/2008
Pay in Full Amount:7.55
Pay in Full Due Date:05/08/2008

Both the min payment and full amount are due on the same date. So does that mean I’m required to make the full payment to keep my credit score up?

Also, since this is Bank of America, I can just transfer money from my Bank of America checking account straight into the credit card to pay my bills right? I don’t have to look up each individual merchant and pay them right?

I wasnt responsible for a major credit card in 1999.Bills are the last thing you care about when you are told from a specialist that you are dying .
My bill was maybe 00 but I wasnt able to pay or work for 13 months due to terminal illness, pain and strong research meds.injections, anyways it was never paid the acct. was closed in 2001. I avoided them after talking to them every week for the first year..The final charge due was maybe ,100(after finance chgs) but it has been in charge off status for maybe a year now. I avoided them after talking to them all that year many times on the phone when i was ill .I have heard long ago avoiding contact is good if your not going to pay.I am in the very slow process of fixing my credit, or rebuilding it.The debt went into"CHARGE OFF"status /06. after being in late pay status for years but the account was closed in the yr 2000 . *When will the charge off be OFF my record of reporting agencies so that my credit score will be higher?

i have read alot of questions concerning this but my question is a little more specific, sorry if its redundant in any way. and any answers wil help since im a little confused about the whole credit score process…i have never checked my score..but there cant be anything wrong since ive never had debt accumulate by any means. ive also maintained a cel phone that i paid off when needed to for about a few years( im assuming this also helps with credit?)

I have had credit cards for about about 8 years or so now and have always paid off credit cards in full. I have opened a few for stores because they give u that added 10-15% off sometmes, and its worth it when making large purchases such as furniture.yet i never used them again…( probably 2 max) so i went ahead and cancelled them because i have never used them since..

Also have cancelled another that i was using as a student becaus its rewards just werent appealing to me anymore…( i did end up getting a little prize with all the points I accumulated upon closing out). not worth it at all though

..so basically I have no cards open until recently acquiring an AMEX…besides my debit/credit card ( which i have no idea if it works to my advantage credit wise when i use it as credit card??)

I accepted the offer from AMEX bc they offer airfare and i thought it would be worth it..but the thing is alot of places i shop dont accept it!! so i am not even able to reach that first 0 (with in the first 2 months)- 30,000 mile bonus incentive…so im thinking of closing it also bc theres no point in having it if i cant use it..but i have a feeling my credit might be getting messed up bc i keep cancelling cards bc i dont want to have so many lying around that i dont use… any ideas or suggestions??

thanks soo much!! sory i wrote a large amount =/
yes you are right i do not have an annual fee. and the stores i shop that don’t accept it are smaller owned clothes stores, etc. today it happened twice. i felt stupid when they sad oh we dont take american express…

also…since the debit card has the option of using it as mastercard (which i do) does that not work for me credit wise?

thanks!
ok so i understand that i should not cancel my new amex. also, should i open up a new visa/mastercard now or wait? or does that even matter credit wise?

also, how many credit cards do people usually have on avg?

thanks!!
