Credit Card Machines
ok i work at a restaurant and the owner has a min for credit cards. no transactions under 4.00 . can they do that? i had a customer that told me she couldn’t do that, that its illegal but i’ve seen people do that. also on the credit card transactions it has the full credit card number. ive had people write over the whole number and my boss tells them that all she needs is the four last numbers just in case there is a problem she can look for the last 4 numbers. they tell her that’s illegal but i think if it was the credit card people would of programed it different right? just want to know if my boss is ok . don’t want them to get in trouble

Yes, it is legal for them to set a minimum amount for credit card purchases. All businesses have to pay a fee each time they accept a credit card. For your company, $4.00 is probably the cheapest they can make it without losing money.
I don’t know why it would be programmed to write all the numbers on the receipt. It isn’t safe, but it’s not illegal as far as I know. The last four digits are the ones that identify your account. If someone saw where your card was from, they could get the routing number easily directly from the bank.

It is not illegal for the owner to set a minimum, but it is against the policy of MasterCard and VISA.
As for the receipt. It is legal for the entire card number to be on the receipt that the store maintains for its records. But it is illegal for that to be on the customer copy. The FTC link below talks about the requirements.
