If someone does take your card number and use it for unauthorized purchases, your bank will be aware of it, and will put a stop on the card. They won't be able to keep using it forever, and you wont be liable for their actions. Check your banks policy to see how much of the charges, if any, you might be responsible for, and also remember to check your statements every month when they come in.
