How do you go about disputing a check?
I am going to stop by the bank on Monday, but I just wanted to get some advice over the weekend before then.
I recently paid with a check for a loan officer training manual that included several CDs and DVDs. When I got home, the package was missing four of the CDs. I immediately called the customer service number and I had to leave a message. They took a couple of days to call me back, but they told me they would mail the missing CDs. I got the package in the mail a few days later and there were only two out of the four missing CDs. I have called back three separate times and left three separate messages trying to resolve this problem, but I have not received a return phone call. I know it would be no issue to dispute the charge if I had paid with a credit card, but I’m not quite sure about the process for disputing a charge when you pay with a check.
The training package was 5, so I’m a little bit irritated to say the least…
Thanks in advance for your advice!
Oh, I forgot to mentio…yes, the check has already cleared. I was planning on stopping the payment on the check when I received the package and realized that it was still missing two CDs, but the check had already been cashed the day prior to that.

If the check has not cleared the bank yet , you can call your banks 24 hour number and place a stop payment on the check, keep in mind though you may be liable for a bounced check or have to pay a fee for the stopped payment. If the check has already cleared there is nothing you can do as far the bank is concerned, but you can always contact the company and tell them you are expecting a refund for returning your books. If they don’t want to cooperate then you may have to speak with a Attorney, or you can inform them that you will make a call to the Federal Trade Commission.
