Well first, I would call the customer back and tell him that his card was declined, and was there any way he could bring you another card, check, cash, etc. If (s)he says no, then you can turn it over to your local DA's office.

Edited to add: Well, in the future then, always, always, ALWAYS (!) get TWO phone numbers, and an address in addition to the DL number. You can copy the address off the DL when you check it for the number. Get all this same info for personal checks as well. Some people may make a stink about it, but it IS common practice, and you have to protect yourself. Count yourself lucky that this is the first time you've had to deal with this!

Yep, contact him and get another form of payment. There's a good chance that he didn't know it would be declined. If that doesn't work, turn it over to the police.

I would contact him first and see if he would make it right, if not call the police, and if that doesn't get you paid back go to small cliams court. I would suggest updating your machine to one that accepts or declines right then.
