Credit Card vs Debit Card Processing?

Credit Card Machines
Are fees applied to establishments that accept credit cards when credit cards are used? For instance, if I bought something form a local retailer and I used my credit card, would the retailer be charged a fee for the credit card transaction? I heard they do, but not sure.
And my —main— question is this: If they do get charged a fee for using a credit card, is it the same when a customer uses a debit card? A card that withdraws money directly from the customers account? Or is that a free charge for the establishment that owns the credit card machine?

Use Credit Card processing. Businesses don’t like it as much because they get charged for it, but for the consumer it is better because with a Debit card, you pay the fees.
