Canadian building good credit in USA?

Hello all!
I am a Canadian Citizen currently in the process of becoming a permanent resident of the USA. Due to a past abusive relationship and teenage stupidity, I don’t have the prettiest credit score in Canada. I want to start building my credit in the US before I receive my Green Card and move down there. Is there anyway to do this without a Social Security Number or any other US documentation? Please help!
(Cell phone? Credit card?)
Also, is there anyway to avoid my Canadian credit from following me to US?

Considering that your US credit score is connected directly to your SS# I think it would be hard to accomplish this.
